Minimum Requirements:
To be eligible for the Lateral Entry Program, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Currently certified as a law enforcement officer through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services
- 21 years of age or older
- U.S. citizen
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent (some college coursework preferred)
- Possess a valid Virginia driver’s license
- Successfully pass all phases of a highly competitive selection process, including:
- Oral review board
- Comprehensive background investigation (including credit, criminal history and driving record checks)
- Interview with the Sheriff
- Medical exam
- Psychological Evaluation
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
