Minimum Requirements:

To be eligible for the Lateral Entry Program, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Currently certified as a law enforcement officer through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services
  • 21 years of age or older
  • U.S. citizen
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent (some college coursework preferred)
  • Possess a valid Virginia driver’s license
  • Successfully pass all phases of a highly competitive selection process, including:
    • Oral review board
    • Comprehensive background investigation (including credit, criminal history and driving record checks)
    • Interview with the Sheriff
    • Medical exam
    • Psychological Evaluation
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
