The Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for the 2025 Junior Deputy Academy, a weeklong summer program designed to introduce local high school students to the world of law enforcement.
The Academy will be held from June 23–27, 2025, at Westmoreland High School, with daily sessions from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The program is open to rising 9th through 11th grade students who reside in Westmoreland County and have a genuine interest in learning about the responsibilities and operations of local law enforcement.
Participants will engage in classroom sessions, live demonstrations, and hands-on practical exercises focused on various aspects of police work, including crime scene investigation, patrol procedures, first aid, drone operation, and K9 demonstrations. The program also provides a unique opportunity for students to interact directly with deputies, supervisors, and Sheriff’s Office leadership.
“The Junior Deputy Academy fosters mutual understanding, breaks down barriers, and strengthens the relationship between our deputies and the youth in our community,” said Sheriff C. O. Balderson. “It’s a valuable investment in the next generation of community leaders.”
Class size is limited to 30 participants, and registration will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications are available for download here, through School Resource Officers or by contacting First Sergeant Smith at (804) 493-0106, extension 2202.
