Position: Court Security Officer
SUMMARY
Performs responsible protective service work ensuring the care and order in courtroom environment. Arrests violators and serves legal processes of courts. Work is performed under the regular supervision of Court Services Sergeant. Serves civil process, subpoenas, and other court papers. Does related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work when assigned.
- Checks courtroom for security and cleanliness.
- Assures availability of sundry supplies for use of Judge and or Clerk.
- Checks baggage, papers, and persons entering courtroom for weapons or other unauthorized items.
- Enforces courtroom rules of behavior.
- Provides jury escort to other areas outside of courtroom to prevent jury contact with public.
- Guards lodging of sequestered jury.
- Operate a patrol vehicle under normal and inclement weather conditions.
- Responsible for maintenance and cleanliness of assigned vehicle.
- Operate radio equipment assigned
- Responsible for security of prisoners in custody.
- Serve arrest warrants, civil papers, and make arrests.
- Prepares detailed reports.
- Answer questions and concerns of citizens.
- Uses firearms proficiently as required in the certification standards on all firearms issued and approved.
- Effectively communicate with all people.
- Perform rescue functions when needed in emergencies.
- Transport prisoners and mental patients using necessary restraints.
- Serve as a court bailiff and court security.
- Present programs to various groups as requested.
- Undergo training as required by the Sheriff and complete certification and in-service standards as required by the Department of Criminal Justice Services and State Statute.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of criminal justice science, the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the rules, regulations, and procedures of the Sheriff's Office. General knowledge of the geographic area of the county to include important buildings and other facilities. Ability to present facts effectively both orally and in writing; ability to prepare detailed reports; skill in the use of firearms; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public; ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately; possess good physical agility and endurance.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work involves a considerable degree or risk to personal safety. This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, running, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, hazards, and atmospheric conditions. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be a U.S. citizen and possess an appropriate Drivers License valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Possession of Law Enforcement Officer Certificate issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must meet and maintain minimum qualifications for the position established by the Sheriff and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
